How to Install Printer Drivers on Windows 11
Setup Guide By James Whitfield · April 25, 2025

Windows 11 handles most printer driver installation automatically, but manual installation is sometimes needed for older printers, network printers, or when automatic detection fails. This guide covers every method.

Automatic Installation

Connect your printer via USB or ensure it's on the same Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device. Windows will search for the printer and install the driver automatically in most cases.

Using Windows Update

If automatic detection doesn't find a driver, click 'The printer that I want isn't listed' and follow the wizard. Windows Update can supply a broader range of printer drivers — allow it to search online for your specific model.

Manufacturer Driver Package

For full feature access (scanning, fax, utilities), download the complete driver package from the printer manufacturer's website. Run the installer and follow the prompts — these packages typically handle everything including network setup.

INF File Manual Installation

If you have an .inf driver file: Settings → Printers & scanners → Add device → 'The printer that I want isn't listed' → Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings → Use an existing port → Have Disk → browse to your .inf file.

Network Printer by IP Address

Settings → Printers & scanners → Add device → 'The printer that I want isn't listed' → Add a printer using a TCP/IP address. Enter the printer's IP address (check the printer's network menu), click Next, and Windows will attempt to identify and install the driver.

Troubleshooting Driver Issues

If a driver installs but the printer won't print: open Device Manager → expand Print queues → right-click your printer → Update driver. You can also try removing the printer entirely and reinstalling. Clearing the print spooler often resolves stuck jobs: run services.msc → Print Spooler → Stop → clear C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS\ → Start.
