Why Is My Printer Printing Blank Pages? 8 Fixes
Troubleshooting By James Whitfield · May 4, 2025

Blank pages coming out of your printer usually point to one of a handful of causes — clogged print heads, empty cartridges, incorrect paper settings, or a software issue. This guide covers all the likely culprits and their fixes.

Check Ink or Toner Levels

The obvious first step. Check ink or toner levels in your printer's software or via the printer's menu. A cartridge may display as non-empty but have a clogged delivery channel or a failed chip reading its level incorrectly.

Run a Nozzle Check

Print a nozzle check pattern from your printer's maintenance menu. If the pattern shows missing sections, you have clogged nozzles. Run the built-in head cleaning utility 1–2 times, then print another nozzle check.

Run Head Cleaning

Most inkjet printers have an automated head cleaning function in their maintenance menu. Run one cleaning cycle, wait 5 minutes, then test print. Running more than 2–3 consecutive cleaning cycles wastes ink without improving results — let the head rest between attempts.

Check the Protective Tape

On new cartridges, a protective tape covers the ink nozzles and must be removed before installation. If you reinstalled an old cartridge after temporary removal, dried ink may be blocking the nozzles.

Check Paper Settings

Some printers won't print if paper settings don't match. Verify the paper size and type selected in the print dialog match the paper loaded in the tray. Mismatched settings can cause blank output on certain printer firmware versions.

Check the Print Spooler

On Windows, go to Services → Print Spooler → Stop. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS\ and delete all files (not the folder). Restart the spooler and try printing again.

Update or Reinstall Drivers

Corrupt or outdated print drivers can cause blank output. Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website, uninstall the current driver, and perform a clean installation.

Perform a Factory Reset

If all else fails, restore the printer to factory settings from the maintenance menu. This clears all custom settings and can resolve persistent firmware issues. Note that this will remove saved Wi-Fi networks and custom configurations.
